About Grand Union Narrowboats
How do we find you?
Our boatyard address is Grand Union Narrowboats, The Boatyard, High Street, Weedon, Northamptonshire NN7 4QD and we’re easily accessible by car and taxi from our local train stations. For detailed information on finding us, check out our comprehensive PDF document.
Is there car parking?
Yes, we have secure car parking on site for our holiday makers, including CCTV.
Are there nearby hotels if we’re travelling from overseas?
Yes, we know that many guests – especially those travelling from further away – like to stay in the area before or after a canal holiday. There are two hotels within walking distance of the boatyard, as well as self-catering cottages nearby. For more information on travelling from overseas, please check our overseas visitor information.
What does the price include?
The price of our holidays include the hire of your canal boat, fuel, insurance, bed linen, towels, and car parking.
How long are your canal boat holidays?
Our short breaks run for three nights, from Friday to Monday, or four nights, from Monday to Friday. We also have routes that span either one or two weeks for longer holidays.
How many canal boats do you have?
We are currently operating 10 canal boats available for hire.
On the narrowboat
Do we get tuition?
Absolutely! There’s no need to panic if this is your first narrowboating experience as we’re well practiced in getting you off to a great start on your holiday. Our instruction includes tuition on how all aspects of the boat works, along with vital safety instructions. We’ll also give you practical steering guidance and meet you at your first lock to talk you through its operation to give you confidence going forward.
Are narrowboats easy to steer?
Our boats are very easy to navigate as they’re built to ensure easy manoeuvrability. We guarantee that we won’t leave you until you’re feeling comfortable and relaxed in handling your holiday boat.
Will there be lifejackets for our children?
Yes, we provide lifejackets and instruct you on how to fit them safely. All our lifejackets conform to European safety standards and are professionally serviced.
Is there a fridge on board?
Yes – we know how important it is to store delicious food for your holiday meals, so all our boats come with fridges that include a small freezer compartment.
Is there cooking equipment?
Each of our boats have four burner hobs, an oven and a grill. An electric toaster and microwave is also included, along with a comprehensive inventory in the galley. If you’d like to find out more about what is on board, we can happily supply an inventory list on request.
Are there charging points for electricals?
All our boats have a mains 240V supply. All we ask is that you charge items throughout the day when the engine is running to conserve your boats overnight battery consumption.
How big are the beds on board?
All of our beds are 6'3" long. The double beds are 4’6” wide and the single beds are 2'3" wide. These are quite generous sizes for narrowboat beds!
Do we have to bring our own towels and bedding?
No – both towels and bedding are provided for you. For longer trips, we also supply additional towels and bed linen for your comfort.
What are the toilets on board like?
We know that bathroom facilities are important – and our boats are equipped with flushing toilets designed to need emptying only once a week with average use. If you do need it to be emptied during your holiday, most boatyards provide this service for a small charge. Please be aware that only 2 ply toilet paper should be flushed – any other items could block the system.

Your holiday
What time do we arrive / depart?
Your boat will usually be available between 2pm and 3pm on your holiday start date and will need to be returned and vacated by 9.30am on your last day.
What should I bring with me?
Since our boats are fully equipped with everything that you need, we recommend just bringing your clothes and essential items. You can bring groceries with you, or if you’re travelling from a distance, order groceries online from any of the major supermarkets to be delivered ahead of your arrival – and we’ll put any perishables in the fridge onboard for you.
Please note that if you plan on bringing suitcases, there won’t be room on your narrowboat to store them. We ask that UK visitors leave them in their car once unpacked, but overseas visitors arriving by taxi are very welcome to leave them with us for the duration of their holiday.
Can we bring our dog?
Your family pet is more than welcome, and a canal boat holiday is an ideal holiday for your four-legged friend. Please note, there is a small additional charge of £25 per dog.
How do we choose a route?
We are spoilt for choice at Weedon, with a delightful selection of routes. Choosing the route for your break very much depends on what you’d like to get from your canal adventure. Our local routes include wide and narrow locks, staircase locks, tunnels, aqueducts, swing bridges, museums, a vast array of pub and restaurants, along of course with our stunning Northamptonshire countryside. If you’re not sure, don’t worry – our experienced team will guide you on your choice of route to suit your needs and expectations.
Where can I moor?
The majority of visitor moorings on canals and rivers that are governed by the Canal & River Trust are free of charge. You can moor anywhere on the towpath side of the canal, as long as your boat is not causing an obstruction.
How do I navigate locks?
We understand that if you’ve never navigated locks before, they can feel daunting. But don’t worry, locks can be quite enjoyable and make up the unique experience of narrowboating – once you get used to them. We will give you a full guide to operating locks before your holiday begins and even meet you at your first one to help ensure you’re comfortable.
What do I do about tunnels or bridges?
If you’re approaching a bridge and can see a boat coming towards you that will reach the bridge ahead of you, you must slow down and give way to them.
When entering a tunnel, it’s important to switch on your headlight and give a long blast on your horn to alert any other canal users.
Are we able to fish during our holiday?
Fishing is permitted on canals with the correct licences and permits – please check what is required on the Canal & River Trust website. Please note that for hygiene reasons, live bait is not allowed on our boats.
Do I need personal holiday insurance?
Although our insurance covers the boat and its equipment against physical loss, damage, and against public liability risks, it doesn’t include personal accident or belongings cover for you. Thus, we would recommend taking out personal insurance cover for your peace of mind.
Can I cancel my booking?
For detailed information about our cancellation policy, please refer to the Boat Hire conditions form.
