Highlights Along the Way
- Weedon’s Peaceful Start
Your adventure begins in Weedon, a quiet village with a strong canal heritage. This is the perfect place to settle in and get familiar with your boat.
- Bugbrooke & Local Villages
Soon after leaving Weedon, you’ll pass through gentle, rural countryside and waterside villages such as Bugbrooke, where you can moor up, take a stroll and enjoy a canalside pub for your first evening.
- Blisworth Tunnel – A Classic Canal Landmark
Next comes the Blisworth Tunnel — one of Britain’s longest canal tunnels, stretching over a mile under Blisworth Hill. It’s a real highlight of the route and a great confidence-boosting milestone for first-timers.
- Stoke Bruerne – Canal Heritage at Its Best
Just south of the tunnel is the charming village of Stoke Bruerne, known for its Canal Museum, picturesque stone bridges and cosy waterside pubs. Stop here for a wander ashore and learn more about the canal’s history and stories.
- Stoke Bruerne Locks
Descending the Stoke Bruerne flight of locks is a fun, hands-on experience that’s surprisingly satisfying even for first-timers. Don’t worry — volunteer lock keepers are often on hand to guide you through your first few.
- Cosgrove & the Iron Trunk Aqueduct
At the southern turn-around point lies Cosgrove, a delightful spot to pause, stretch your legs and explore the towpath country. Here you’ll find the impressive Cosgrove Aqueduct (sometimes called the Iron Trunk) — an elegant cast-iron structure carrying the canal over the River Great Ouse with lovely views all around.
The village itself offers scenic walks and a classic canalside pub — perfect for celebrations or a relaxing evening before turning back.
Canalside Pubs & Places to Enjoy
One of the joys of this route is the string of welcoming pubs and cafés you pass. From the Wharf at Bugbrooke to the Boat Inn and Spice of Bruerne in Stoke Bruerne, there are plenty of opportunities to savour good food, local ales and friendly company right by the water.
Tips for First-Time Boaters
- Take it slow: This route is about enjoying the journey — most crews take their time, stopping to walk villages, explore historic spots and take in the tranquil scenery.
- Ask for help: Lock volunteers are friendly and happy to show you the ropes — especially on your first flight of locks.
- Plan your stops: Mooring spots are plentiful, especially near pubs and village centres
Final Thought
The Weedon to Cosgrove route embodies everything that makes canal boating special: tranquil cruising, friendly waterways, iconic features like the Blisworth Tunnel and Cosgrove aqueduct, and the chance to explore quintessential English villages along the water. Whether you’re trying narrowboating for the first time or returning for another peaceful escape, this route delivers a memorable experience that’s perfect for novices and seasoned boaters alike.
Expert Support for First-Time Narrowboaters

If you’re not sure, don’t worry – our experienced team will guide you on your choice of route to suit your needs and expectations.
Where can I moor?
The majority of visitor moorings on canals and rivers that are governed by the Canal & River Trust are free of charge. You can moor anywhere on the towpath side of the canal, as long as your boat is not causing an obstruction.
How do I navigate locks?
We understand that if you’ve never navigated locks before, they can feel daunting. But don’t worry, locks can be quite enjoyable and make up the unique experience of narrowboating – once you get used to them. We will give you a full guide to operating locks before your holiday begins and even meet you at your first one to help ensure you’re comfortable.
What do I do about tunnels or bridges?
If you’re approaching a bridge and can see a boat coming towards you that will reach the bridge ahead of you, you must slow down and give way to them.
When entering a tunnel, it’s important to switch on your headlight and give a long blast on your horn to alert any other canal users.
Are we able to fish during our holiday?
Fishing is permitted on canals with the correct licences and permits – please check what is required on the Canal & River Trust website. Please note that for hygiene reasons, live bait is not allowed on our boats.
Do I need personal holiday insurance?
Although our insurance covers the boat and its equipment against physical loss, damage, and against public liability risks, it doesn’t include personal accident or belongings cover for you. Thus, we would recommend taking out personal insurance cover for your peace of mind.
